To Catch A Liar: Awkward Moments People Were Caught Lying Online

Most of us have been caught in a lie now and then. Often, it’s just the white lies we tell to get ourselves out of doing something. Or so that we don’t hurt someone else’s feelings. A popular fib is lying that you have the flu so that you don’t have to go to school or work.

Most of us usually get away with being caught in the lie, but a select few have to relieve these shameful moments that were publicized on the internet. We hate to add salt to the injury, but let’s revisit a couple of awkward moments when people were called out for trying to pull a fast one on others online.

Record-Breaking Status

We’ve all been there at some point when you feel like you need a pat on the back for your achievements. They might not be ground-breaking achievements, and so you come up with the idea to inflate your victories. Rob thought that he should brag about completing a 5K run in just 10 minutes.

Cal wasn’t going to let him get away with the fib, and he swiftly pointed out that the world record for finishing a 5K run is 12 minutes. If indeed Rob set a new record, perhaps he should have got in touch with the folks at Guinness World Records, or the very least, he should have documented it on a fitness tracker.

Someone Else’s New Car

Cars are amongst the list of mundane things that most people love showing off on social media. That’s why we can’t blame this girl for deciding to show off her new Porsche. After all, how many of us get the chance of scoring one of these luxury vehicles?

However, we don’t seem to understand why she is holding what looks like a Volkswagen key. Could she have just been walking to her actual car and came across this sweet ride, which looked like a great backdrop for her orchestrated ruse?

Missing Belly Button

The pressure on social media has seen people doing the craziest things just so that they can make it seem like they are ahead. This guy wanted to flex his abs, and the photo made him the talk of the internet, for reasons he didn’t expect.

No one is talking about his ripped abs, but people are questioning how he lost his belly button. The guy tried to explain the odd look away by saying that it’s the result of putting in hard work for a week to get the abs.

Grave Lies

The worst lies drag a whole bunch of people into the mess. Take this girl, for instance; she wanted to tell a white lie about her supposed fun evening plans with her husband. The problem is that she seems to have a short memory because she had told someone else a lie.

Perhaps she wanted to get out of plans with the first person who commented and told them that she was covering up for her boss, who had lost his dad. Her boss chimed in saying that his dad is not deceased. Just imagine going to work after this.

People Don’t Read Anymore

Sometimes you want to seem knowledgeable, but your efforts end up falling flat. The guy who posted this was taking a jab at someone who had been posting endlessly about the Great Gatsby. He pointed out that everyone who went to school read the book.

It turned out that one of those things wasn’t true in his case, because after an exchange with someone in the comments section, he exposed his problem with the book. He wasn’t able to pick out a quote that essentially opened up the classic and the fact that he hadn’t read the book.

Fine-Tuned

The Kardashians are known for many things, and their highly edited photos are one of these things. They might deny altering their social media photos to paint them in good light, but they say that pictures don’t lie, and that’s what Kris Jenner now knows.

Kris took a photo with celebrated chef Gordon Ramsay and shared a fine-tuned version on her Instagram account. The only problem is that Ramsay also shared a similar unedited photo on his account, and it authentically captured how Kris looks in real life. At least in the edited version, Kris also fine-tuned Ramsay’s looks.

Still Kicking

Twitter has sadly killed many celebrities before their time, and it’s worse when the news comes from an authoritative source that should know better. Rotten Tomatoes shared a tweet giving an ode to actor John Carpenter and sharing some of his five favorite films.

The only problem is that Carpenter is still alive and kicking, despite taking a hit from the natural aging process. Carpenter was a great spot responding to the tweet and announcing that he’s not deceased. This is an excellent example of why Rotten Tomatoes slowly suffered a decline as the go-to source for film reviews and ratings.

Self-ish

They say that the eyes don’t lie, and Marvin here must not have gotten that memo. He found an opportune moment to snap a selfie, but something was missing. Marvin knew that some dramatic captions accompany all great selfies, and so, he made one up.

Marvin claimed that he was stuck in traffic, but his sunglasses came through with the truth. Zoom in, and you can make out the reflection of the deserted highway road ahead. Let’s not even get into an argument about why he was snapping photos while driving.

The Invisible Pen

School jocks have a reputation for being great athletes, but at the same time, they are usually bullies. Some jocks are known to shake their classmates around, bullying them into doing their homework.

This photo seems to tell a different story at first glance, but you have to take a closer look to see it. Last we checked, you have to have an actual pen to work hard as the caption claims. This athlete from Scott Meadows seems to have discovered some type of invisible pen, or they might have just been told to pose for this deceptive photo.

Not Quite As Tall As A Mountain

We are amongst the list of Game of Thrones fans who are still waiting for another show to match up to its legacy. Gregor Clegane portrayed the role of The Mountain, and we still remember him as the towering brute who was always clad in metal.

The lies we bought on that show! Clegane isn’t exactly that tall, and they used a lot of camera angle trickery to make him look menacingly overpowering. The photo on the right shows Clegane being dwarfed by basketball players. The basketball players are over 7 feet tall, but we still thought The Mountain was around that height.

Starbucks’s Comeback

As a Tv/radio personality, Mark Simone knows the value of fact-checking information. On this occasion, he must have forgotten this journalist-value and went ahead to criticize Starbucks. Simone alleged that the coffee chain was not giving veterans equal opportunities to work at the company.

Starbucks responded to his tweet with facts saying that they had a target of hiring 10K veterans as of 2018, and they already had 8,800 on board. The calm and classic response makes us respect the chain even more. Hopefully, Simone got around to apologizing for his oversight.

Chivalrous Hogwash

The internet offers a flood of information, but you shouldn’t believe everything you come across. Imagine if you were researching for a school project and came across this compelling image and story. Anyone would want to use it for a history paper.

The only problem is that this Reddit user who posted it got it all wrong. Someone corrected them on the thread, saying that it’s just an art installation found in Belgium. It kind of puts a damper on the chivalrous story claiming that the chairs date back to a wedding in the ‘30s.

That’s Not How You Hold Phones

We all know that Hollywood is built on lies; well, we are referring to the fact that productions are mostly based on made-up stories and rely on actors to bring them to life. During filming, there’s an entire department dedicated to continuity, and they are also often tasked with making sure things look real.

That department must have been sleeping on the job during this scene on Pretty Little Liars. Most of us don’t hold our phones in an upside-down position unless it’s some new age thing we don’t know about.

Fake It Till You Make It

They say that you can fake it till you make it, and there’s no better place to do it than on social media. That’s what this University of Miami swimmer was after, claiming that he won a race. The real winner wasn’t having it, and he called out this poser in the comments section.

We guess if you are going to claim someone else’s glory, don’t tag the institution you attend on the post. Perhaps also make sure that the real winner doesn’t follow you, and go for an inspiring quote that doesn’t exactly claim the victory.

Run Down

We all want the best for our dads, and that’s to see them healthy. If you have an older man who decided to start exercising, then that’s a battle half won. They also have to fight off sleep after working 13-hour days and tending to chores at home like taking out the trash.

This poor dad just couldn’t fight his heavy eyelids and somehow ended up catching a much-needed snooze on the floor. That is after ceremoniously announcing that he was going for a run, starting with stretching his back as he laid down.

Not On Taco Bell’s Watch

Twitter created a new breed of social media users, and we are talking about the attention seekers. It always seems like there’s a competition to get the most retweets on that platform, and users of the platform have to get creative with their tweets continually.

Zach Small must love Taco Bell, and he decided to include the fast-food chain in his ruse. He claimed that with 10K retweets Taco Bell would start delivering. Once again, we have someone who didn’t think ahead, and Taco Bell responded, bringing the sham to an end.

Best Seats In The House

Who wouldn’t want to catch their favorite team at the Super Bowl? It just isn’t possible for all of us to score these tickets, and the next best thing is to cheer for our team from the comfort of our couches at home.

This guy must have wanted to join the flurry of people sharing their Super Bowl experience on social media. He must have realized that he could tell a fib with this photo taken in his living room, but he soon realized that you can’t fool everyone all the time.

Framed

Our four-legged friends are not exempt from being caught up in people’s deceptive ways. Take this cute and innocent dog; for instance, his owner tried to frame him for this crime. Sure, canines are known to cause costly damage at home, but something is amiss here.

One person in the comment section points out the obvious, and usually, dogs don’t take the time to open up zippers when they are causing a mess. We believe that this dog is innocent until proven otherwise because if he had committed the crime, the damage would have been worse.

Bumping Into Your Favorite Celebrity On Social Media

Everyone can’t help but brag about the day that they met their favorite celebrity and dish out the details about what happened. Usually, these are conversations we have to entertain during gatherings with friends and family, but now there’s social media as well.

This One Direction fan was beside himself recounting how he met Harry Styles, who gave him $100. The only thing he never counted on is Harry Styles coming across the post, and putting things straight. Styles never attended the Tigers game as the guy claims, and it leaves the question about the cash he supposedly received.

Ripping Off A Meme

The internet has provided a vortex where memes can endlessly make rounds. You might even share a couple of them without really knowing their origin. That’s what we believe happened here. This guy decided to share a witty caption lifted from a meme.

The thing about memes is that someone somewhere has come across just about all of them. That’s what we believe happened here when the poster ripped off a Jimmy Kimmel quote. They probably would have gotten away with it if not for the pesky person down in the comment section.

The Greedy Hare

People rip off just about everything online, and artists have to keep fighting the battle against plagiarism. There is the category of people who post motivational and inspirational quotes claiming that they came up with wise words. Then some lift images from somewhere and claim that they created the works of art themselves.

Rebecca falls in the latter category, and she might have gotten away with it if she didn’t claim to have drawn it. She could have left it at sharing the image and the witty caption, but since she became as greedy as a hare.

Millennials Didn’t Do It

Millennials are always accused of just about everything that seems to go wrong with the world these days. This woman managed to snap a photo showing one such injustice committed by these youngsters. The sheer nerve they had to occupy the disabled seat.

Wait a minute; when we inspect the photo, we can see that there is an empty seat behind the woman. Why couldn’t she have just sat down there? Someone even pointed it out in the comments section because there’s more than enough room available. It doesn’t warrant pointing fingers at these innocent Millennials.

Post Gone South

Memes are the stand-up comedy tools of the internet. Everyone could use a good laugh, and these, usually hilarious, captioned photos do the trick. The problem is that not all of them hit the right notes, and they can turn sour.

This egocentric guy lifted this woman’s photo to create this mean-spirited meme. He wanted attention, and he got it when the lady retorted back, reminding that she doesn’t like him. The guy might have had to delete his Twitter account after this because there’s no way of coming back from this slow grill.

Large Claims

It’s always heart-warming to read stories about someone who had a rough time in high school rising above their past. Such accounts are more compelling when photos are attached. However, that also means that people from your past can have their say about your claims. This perfectly beautiful girl implied that she was called ugly back in middle school.

One of her past schoolmates was quick to remind her that she never went through such bullying. And that she should have just posted the photo minus the massive claims. Fortunately, she didn’t have to go to school the next day.

Not A Smooth Operator

It gets to that point when you start feeling like age is catching up. And perhaps it’s the best time to start looking for a prospective suitor. It isn’t always easy for ladies to approach men, and that’s why they try to do it online.

The problem comes when you try to lie about yourself online, and you get quickly reminded that it’s a different ball game on the internet. This lady wanted it to look like she had accidentally left her Facebook open at the library, and someone ended up posting this message on her account.

Shady Shadow

If there’s a lesson to learn, so far, it’s that internet sleuths are always watching. And they can quickly unravel tall tales. Now, this young man just wanted to share what he says is his best photo, only that he decided to throw in a lie along with it.

He claimed that the sun was blinding his eyes when the photo was snapped, but his shadow betrays him. The comment section is savage, with everyone reminding him about how shadows work. Sometimes, a picture doesn’t need a caption to accompany it.

Cruel Intentions

Everyone should watch out for social media fraudsters. Someone can easily lift your photos and open up an account using them with ill intentions. Take this unsuspecting lady, for instance, she stumbled on a photo of herself posted on a page claiming that she had cancer.

She quickly commented that she did not have cancer and went ahead to report the page. Such fraudsters are usually after looking for a quick payday, and sadly, even if one page is taken down, they always pop up with another. Even sadder is the fact that they are using a severe illness like cancer for their cruel intentions.

Underhand Sellers

Online shopping revolutionized our buying habits, but it also gave underhand resellers a playing ground. The reason why most people go for “fairly used” products is because they are significantly more affordable. However, we know that most sellers inflate the claims about using the products they are offering for sale.

This guy decided to offload a pair of eyeglasses he claimed have been in the box and never used. The only problem is that he should have changed his profile picture. It clearly shows him wearing the same eyeglasses he claims are not his shape.

Old Joke

Every generation keeps singing praises of the good old days. Such folks now have the internet to share nostalgic photos of the past. The problem is authenticity because some just want to join in on the wagon through false representation.

The person who posted this photo must have thought that this was a grocery store in 1979, and the photo was taken at midnight. That would have been cool if it was true. Once again, a Reddit user noticed the obvious, which is a Powerade stand, and those were most definitely not yet available in the ‘70s.
