Mugabe’s leadership has been praised for helping to liberate Zimbabwe from British imperialism and colonialism. On the other hand, he’s been criticized for his dictatorship and economic mismanagement. The country’s ruined economy had an impact on the rise of the HIV epidemic in the ‘90s. Towards the end of 2017, a rebellion forced Mugabe into resignation and he was accorded full diplomatic status soon after. He went ahead to hold press conferences in 2018 stating that he had been ousted in a coup d’etat and terming his successor Emmerson Mnangagwa's presidency as unconstitutional.
Pierre Cardin, 96 Years Old
French fashion designer Pierre Cardin is best known for his signature space age and avant-garde designs. In 1991, Cardin became the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Goodwill Ambassador. He also dabbled in industrial design, coming up with ‘themes’ that are applicable across various products. Cardin landed a contract with the American Motors Corporation which incorporated his theme on the AMC Javelin. Cardin unsuccessfully tried to sell his business in 2011 for €1 billion despite the Wall Street Journal valuing it at a fifth of the amount and ultimately, the brand never sold.
Stirling Moss, 89 Years Old
Former British Formula One racer Sir Stirling Craufurd Moss is an International Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee. He boasts of winning 212 out of the total of 529 races that he entered during his career. Moss first retired from racing in 1962 after a crash but he made a comeback to regular racing in 1980 through to 2011 when he finally retired once again. In December of 2016, Moss became ill and was admitted to a medical facility in Singapore. He had a serious chest infection and what followed was a lengthy recovery period and subsequently, in January 2018, he announced his retirement from public life.
Joni Mitchell, 75 Years Old
Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has many accolades under her belt, including nine Grammy Awards. Her music draws on jazz, folk, pop, and rock fusions, and focusses on addressing environmental and social ideals. Mitchell has also impressively produced most of her albums. She released her 17th and final album in 2007 which, in turn, ended her career in the music industry. She disclosed in 2010 that she was suffering from the Morgellons syndrome and quit the music industry to raise awareness about the illness. The medical consensus about the self-diagnosed skin condition (which sufferers explain is characterized by sores and blisters) is that it’s a form of delusional infestation.
Paul Gascoigne, 51 Years Old
Paul Gascoigne formerly played soccer professionally, earning the nickname “Gazza.” Gascoigne, along with team England, made it to the 1990 FIFA World Cup and they clinched the fourth place. He famously cried when he received a yellow card when playing against West Germany during the semi-finals of that World Cup. Gascoine has had a history with alcoholism and mental illness. It’s been a downward spiral for Gascoigne who has been involved in several alcoholism-induced incidents and his most recent stint in rehabilitation was in January 2017. In November 2018, Gascione was charged for indecent assault following an incident that took place aboard a train in August of that year.
Javier Perez de Cuellar, 99 Years Old
Former Peruvian diplomat Javier de Cuellar served as the United Nationa’s fifth Secretary-General from 1982 to 1991. Cuellar was also Peru’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister from 2000 to 2001. He’s also a Club de Madrid member composed of over 100 former Prime Ministers and Presidents. Cuellar turned 99 on January 19, 2019, making him the oldest living former Secretary General of the U.N. and Peruvian prime minister. Cuellar had a heart attack in 2005, forcing him to spend eight days at a Paris medical facility. On October 24, 2018, false reports circulated claiming that Cueller had passed away but they were soon refuted.
Jill Gascoine, 81 Years Old
British novelist and actress Jill Gascoine is perhaps best known for her role in the '80s series The Gentle Touch followed by its spin-off, C.A.T.S. Eyes. Gascoine has been twice married first to hotelier Bill Keith and then to actor Alfred Molina, and she has two sons from her first marriage. Gascoine has suffered from clinical depression for the better part of her life, and she has fully recovered from kidney cancer after an early diagnosis in 1997. In 2013, she revealed that she suffers from Alzheimer’s and in 2016, her husband reported that she had reached an advanced stage of the illness.

He started out as a child actor and his career spans across theater, radio, TV, and films, and his first big screen role was in the 1955 full movie, Geordie. Baxter has also written several publications based on the populous Scottish city - Glasgow. He has earned multiple awards over the years, including BAFTA awards for some of his self-titled TV shows. In August of 2014, Baxter signed a letter addressed to The Guardian by public figures expressing their vote against Scotland becoming independent from the United Kingdom.

At 92, Giscard holds the record of being the longest-living former French President. Giscard married Anne-Aymone Sauvage de Brantes, his cousin, in 1952 and they had four children together. His private life had always been under scrutiny with both national and international newspapers running stories about his affairs with different women.

Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger, better known as Pope Benedict XVI, served as the head of the Vatican City and the Catholic Church from 2005 until 2013. He was elected by way of the 2005 papal conclave following the passing of Pope John Paul II. Pope Benedict XVI has penned 66 publications as well as three apostolic exhortations and three encyclicals. Ratzinger suffered from a hemorrhagic stroke in 1991, resulting in the temporary loss of his eyesight but he recovered completely without resorting to eye surgery. In 2016, his son Alaa Mubarak's name came up as having financial interests related to Mossack Fonseca, the law/financial advisory firm that was in the midst of the Panama Papers scandal.
Louis Farrakhan, 85 Years Old
Born Louis Eugene Walcott and better known as Louis X, Farrakhan is a minister and black nationalist leader of the Nation of Islam (NOI). He previously served as the Harlem and Boston minister of mosques as appointed by Elijah Muhammad, the former NOI leader. In 1995, he organized and led the Washington D.D. Million Man March with the aim of highlighting attention for minority and urban issues through voter registration campaigns. Farrakhan spent five weeks in a medical facility starting January 28, 2007, for abdominal surgery. The procedure corrected damage caused by the radioactive “seed” implantation cancer treatment he’d undergone years earlier.
Ian St John, 80 Years Old
Former footballer Ian St John previously played for Liverpool throughout the '60s and before that for Scotland for a total of 21 times. During his time with Liverpool, they won several championships and they were runners-up for more. Post playing, St John later became a pundit and the manager of his former clubs Portsmouth and Motherwell. As a pundit, he offered commentary for various TV stations and radio stations, including ITV’s World of Sport and European Championships. He also contributes to Radio City 96.7. In 2008, he became a Scottish Football Hall of Fame inductee. He underwent surgery to treat bladder cancer in April 2014.
Jimmy Greaves, 78 Years Old
James Peter Greaves played football professionally as a forward for England and ranks as the country’s fourth highest goalscorer internationally. Greaves is also an English Football Hall of Famer. He started out with Chelsea in 1957 and went on to also play for A.C. Milan, Tottenham Hotspur, and West Ham United, amongst other teams. Jimmy married Irene Barden in 1958 but they started their divorce process amidst Greaves battling with alcoholism. However, they reunited three months later and had four children together. Ronnie Wood, 71 Years Old
Former The Rolling Stones member Ronald Wood has also served as a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, radio personality, and author. Wood had his start in 1964 on guitar for the English rhythm and blues band, The Birds. He then moved over to the rock band The Creation and then the Jeff Beck Group. After Mick Taylor left The Rolling Stones, Wood replaced him in 1975, staying on with the band since that time. Wood has also recorded several solo albums, including Now Look released in 1975. In 2017, Wood had part of his lung removed after being diagnosed with carcinoma in his lung. However, Wood refused to go through chemo to avoid chemotherapy hair loss.
Murray Walker, 95 Years Old
Graeme Murray Walker is a British journalist by profession who served as a motocross commentator. He provided commentary on BBC TV for live Formula One events running from 1976 to 1996 and then for ITV from 1997 to 2001. Walker retired from commentary work following the 2001 United States Grand Prix and returned to part-time broadcasting in 2005. He still makes occasional appearances on Sky Sports F1, BBC, and Channel 4. In May 2013, Walker had a slip and fall mishap resulting in a pelvis injury. When getting treated for the injury, he was diagnosed with lymphatic system cancer, through June, he reported that he no longer needed chemotherapy.
Harry Belafonte, 91 Years Old
Singer-songwriter, actor, and activist Harry Belafonte is credited for popularizing the Caribbean musical style internationally. Johnny Clegg, 65 Years Old
Anthropologist Johnny Clegg has had a long and successful career as a recording artist along with his bands Davuka and Juluka. Clegg later on gained popularity as a solo act but he still regularly reunited with his former band members. English drummer Ginger Baker founded the rock band Cream and his compositions in the ‘60s earned him recognition as the first rock superstar drummer. Baker’s style fuses African rhythms with jazz backgrounds, and he’s credited for pioneering drumming in the world music, jazz fusion, and heavy metal genres. In June 2016, Baker divulged that he suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary heart disease brought about by years spent smoking heavily. He had open heart surgery that same year and Baker later suffered a fall causing swelling to his feet and legs.

Mikhail Gorbachev formerly served as the Soviet Union’s eighth and last leader after his reign as the Communist Party of the Soviet Union’s General Secretary. Gorbachev then led the country as its head of state beginning 1988 until 1991. During his presidency, he promoted peaceful international relations, and he played a key role in the negotiations with former U.S. President Reagan and had a hand in ending the Cold War. After his resignation in 1991, he started the Gorbachev foundation but he’s still active in political and social causes. In 2009, Gorbachev recorded a Russian ballad album titled Songs for Raisa to raise funds for charities in honor of his late wife.
Cleo Laine, 91 Years Old
Dame Cleo Laine is a renowned English actress and pop/jazz singer well-known for her impeccable vocal range. She’s naturally a contralto but she can also sing in the G and higher C ranges, giving her more than a three-octave range. Laine also boasts of being the only female performer to ever have received classical, jazz, and popular music Grammy nominations. Laine was married to extraordinaire jazz composer Sir John Dankworth who unfortunately passed on in February of 2010. Dankworth worked as an educator offering music lessons and he was also Laine’s music director.
Vanessa Redgrave, 81 Years Old
English political activist and actress Vanessa Redgrave earned herself an induction into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2003. She rose to prominence through the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1961 production, As You Like It. Redgrave is a six-time Oscar nominee and she's won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role in the 1977 film Julia. She’s a part of the famous Redgrave family of actors, including her daughters Natasha Richardson and Joely Richardson, her son-in-law Liam Neeson, and niece Jemma Redgrave. Years of smoking cigarettes caused Redgrave to suffer from emphysema and in 2015, she revealed that her lungs were operating at only 30% of their capacity.
Nobby Stiles, 76 Years Old
Nobby Stiles formerly played football for England internationally, earning 28 cups throughout his career. Stiles also scored one goal while playing for team England and he also stayed on the field throughout the time that the country victoriously participated in the eighth FIFA World Cup in 1966. He also played for Manchester United for the majority of his career and spent eleven years at the Old Trafford. In 2013, Stiles revealed that he had prostate cancer followed by an announcement in 2016 that he was receiving round-the-clock assistance from a dementia caregiver, having reached an advanced stage of the disease.
Jacques Chirac, 86 Years Old
Jacques Chirac is a former French politician who served as the Mayor of Paris, Prime Minister, and finally the country’s head of state during his career. Chirac earned a degree from the Sciences Po and he also attended the Ecole Nationale d'administration and the Harvard University. He then began his career working as a civil servant before entering politics shortly after. Chirac held several senior offices under the French government, including Minister of the Interior and Minister of Agriculture. Since leaving the office in 2007, he has been implicated severally in corruption cases. Chirac received a suspended sentence in December 2011 after a court found him guilty of diverting public funds.
Alan Greenspan, 92 Years Old
American economist Alan Greenspan served as the U.S. Federal Reserve chairman for 19 years until 2006. At 92, he’s not about to settle in a retirement home and instead, he still regularly works as a private adviser through Greenspan Associates LLC. He’s a recipient of the 2005 Presidential Medal of Freedom and the 2002 rank of Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Greenspan got married twice; first, to Canadian artist Joan Mitchell (they had an annulment) and then to journalist Andrea Mitchell. In the ‘70s, he also dated journalist/TV personality, Barbara Walters.
Bob Hawke, 89 Years Old
Bob Hawke holds the accolade of being the longest-serving Australian Labor Party Prime Minister. Hawke, a former Aussie politician, served as the country’s 23rd Prime Minister as well as the Labor Party leader from ‘83 through to ‘91. Hawke achieved immense financial success following his tenure in parliament by taking up numerous consultancy and directorship positions in the business world. As a public figure, Hawke’s cheating scandals were highly publicized and he ended up leaving his first wife Hazel Masterson for biographer Blanche d’Alpuget. He fell ill in late 2018, saying that he might not be able to witness the Labor Party’s victory during the 2019 elections.
Gordon Banks, 81 Years Old
Gordon Banks served England as an international goalkeeper, earning a total of 73 cups during his 15-year career. His club career included playing for Chesterfield, Leicester City, Stoke City, and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Banks is the uncle to drummer Nick Banks who plays for the English rock band, Pulp. In May 2006, he became the first legend inducted into the Sheffield Walk of Fame and in 2011, he also became a City of Stoke-on-Trent Hall of Famer. In December 2015, Banks made an announcement that he suffered from kidney cancer and he was undergoing medical treatment.
