Great Designs Are Amazing, But Lousy Designs Are Even Better

Do you know that old expression "it's so bad it's good"? We love how finely it applies to the designs we're about to show you... In our world of personalized products, exquisite taste, and over-the-top styles, there's always room for some whoppingly horrible design fails. But even the least optimistic of all fashion experts and interior decorators wouldn't dream of designs as horrid as the ones you're about to see.

Make no mistake: this is not a list for the faint at heart. The houses, bathrooms, living rooms, and household products we have for your today are the type of thing you'd expect to see in a horror movie. If there's a hell, this is how it is decorated! Yes, it's that bad. From insect-covered toilet seats to furry staircases, from electrically-wired sinks to suspending pianos, there's a little bit of every type of crazy in our comprehensive list of bizarre designs.

A House With a Twist

This family had a beautiful house in the countryside. But then, they decided to get all creative with it. And the result is this bizarre anomaly that looks like something that was never built to completion. The practical use for these creative construction add-ons? We have no idea!

We can see how the odd tower on the left would work, even though it makes the entire house look a whole lot creepier. But what about that dangerously high balcony on the top? Is it supposed to be a bird-watching platform, or is the world's smallest helicopter about to land in there?

The Stairs Are Alive!

Regular stairs are just functional, plain, and boring. But what can you really do to make your stairs look fresh and unique? Judging by this picture, a lot! Yet, having something original isn't always the same as having something attractive. Some of the worst original designs out there are simply horrid...

This man wanted to feel like he was climbing through a furry monster's back whenever he was walking upstairs. So, he did this monstrosity and covered his stairs with LOTS of hair. Somebody call National Geographic because we've just found Big Foot!

An Unbreathable Bedroom

We've just taken ONE look at this crazy bedroom, and we're already feeling like we're about to drown. Ocean-themed bedrooms are pretty popular, but we don't think we've ever seen the concept being taken this far.

Nevermind the gigantic swimming elephant on the ceiling, even though it is completely out of this world. The real design shockers here are the tiled walls and the water-themed transparent chairs. It's kind of a mix between being in an oceanarium and a public bathhouse, except you're supposed to sleep in there every single night.

"So, What's Your Hobby?"

Humans are curious animals. When they get fixated on one thing, they will often not stop until... they cover their entire house's furniture with it! And the result can be as daunting on the mind as it is painful on the eyes. We think we need a new pair of glasses after taking a look at this mess!

You know when people say, "don't look directly at an eclipse?". We think this kitchen may have the same effect on our fragile eyeballs. Who could've guessed that Karen's decorative painting classes would result in something as terrifying as this?

Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue, And This Bathroom is Yellow

We could mention the many Greek statues spread all over the place. We could even talk about the three silly ducks on top of the cistern. We could also mention the tacky toilet seat cover. But we guess "yellow" is the definitive point this bathroom is trying to make.

Can you imagine the interaction between this homeowner and his interior designer? The interior designer asked him how much yellow he wanted in the bathroom, to which he must have replied, "yes." The result is this monochromatic design disaster that will make you want to wear sunglasses every time nature calls.

Please Hate These Things

A little door for your door's peephole. It sounds like a terrible idea, doesn't it? There's a whole lot more design fails in the Instagram page @pleasehatethesethings. Run by the interior designer Dina Holland, this social media profile is on a mission: to collect some of the world's most absurd and shocking home designs.

Most of the pictures you'll be seeing next come with the "un-quality" seal of Dina Holland, a woman who is as good at making great interior designs as she is at spotting the awful ones. Don't forget to visit her Instagram page after you're done with our list!

Honky-Tonk Kitchen

Pianos are extremely heavy and can take a whole lot of space in your home. But suspending your piano above the kitchen stove is surely not the best way of getting that extra space back.

The immediate downside of doing this is aesthetic: it looks not only bizarre but pretty ugly! Add the fact that the piano could fall at any moment and that getting hit will end in all sorts of cooking fumes, and you have a recipe for disaster. We also love food and music, but we prefer to keep both passions separate.

A Sink To Die For

Water and electric sockets. What a great combination, right? We've seen some mindless designs on our list, but this is probably the first that could get you outright killed! Was this supposed to be a bad joke? Or was someone truly challenged enough to make this crass mistake?

Bathrooms tend to be a surprisingly dangerous place. Every year, there are up to 40,000 toilet-related injuries and deaths in the United States alone. We always thought it was because accidents just happen, but now we can see that there's an even simpler explanation for the fact...

Flower Power

Everybody loves flowers. But the owner of this crazy bathroom has such a deep love for the beautiful plants that it's not even healthy anymore. This homeowner wanted to feel like she was standing in the middle of a rosy garden while doing her physiological duties. But her plan didn't work out...

Flower-themed carpet on the floor, walls, and ceiling, a flower-themed toilet seat, a flower towel on the right, and even flower-covered toilet paper. She thought of everything, except the dismal effect this bathroom is sure to have on her visitors!

Proud to Be Greek

People can take pride in almost anything, with one of the most common being their nationality. We're assuming this rather crazy house belongs to a man or woman named Parashos, which is a relatively common surname in Greece. And we're pretty sure Parashos is nothing but a bonafide patriot.

While Greece has been mostly known for its whopping public debt in recent years, the Greeks do have a rich and ancient culture that deserves to be celebrated. We're just not sure that turning your house into a sort of Greek sanctuary is the right way to go...

The Things That Matter the Most

More than a place for making some horrible decor mistakes, a home has a feeling; it's a site in which you can be safe and loved and that you can share with the people who are the most special to you. And the best thing about your home? It's up to you to make the rules and decide what matters the most!

In this living room, there are three priorities: family, friends, and... You can see the last one, right? To be fair to these guys, nothing says "love" like being able to be the most natural version of yourself and still find acceptance.

Ugly Fixer-Upper

When choosing the design of your new home, it's important to get some things right from the start. Otherwise, you can end up with something like this—a fixer-upper of disastrous proportions, which is meant to ruin every single day.

Want to wash your hands? You'd better crouch a little. Want to look yourself in the mirror? You'd better step on your toes. With a sink and mirror this inefficient, you're likely to suffer from severe back pain before you're even 30. Not to mention it will make your bathroom look certifiably odd.

And They Don't Even Have a Cat...

The term 'tacky' can apply to all sorts of designs, depending only on your taste and personal take on things. But can we unanimously agree that this house is about as tacky as tacky gets?

This spiral staircase is not only covered in some brown fur, but it also looks like something that even a household cat wouldn't want to scratch to keep his claws sharp. And let's not forget about that blue door that's clearly meant to make you feel like you're in Wonderland as soon as you get home.

A Bathroom's Instruction Manual

People can be unlimitedly clueless sometimes. But if there's one place where we always know what to do, that place is the bathroom. That said, there's arguably no worse W.C. design fail than this... Covering your wall with bathroom instructions? That's a certified way of getting constipated every single morning!

Additionally, the way these three simple orders are placed makes us feel like we have to follow the instructions chronologically. As if these three actions were dependent on one another. "Johnny, don't forget the poop before the pee, but only after the fart." What nonsense!

A Very Remote Kitchen Island

People who live on islands are often isolated, but that doesn't mean you have to translate their feelings into your kitchen's design. This picture shows the type of island that's truly lost in the middle of the ocean. So lost that it makes us think of the Bermuda Triangle!

Ideally, islands should be placed in the center of the kitchen, respecting the "kitchen work triangle" rule. As a work surface, this means the island should be amongst a triangle's three points marking the refrigerator, the stove, and the sink. It sounds simple because it is. But it looks like this concept is lost on some people.

"Almost" is Good Enough

Some of the world's worst design fails are not the result of poor taste and tacky decisions. Sometimes, they are born out of sheer incompetence, laziness, and disregard for detail. This chandelier is a perfect example. You can see clearly that the positioning is off, but is it even worth it to go through the fuss of making it right?

These care-free homeowners apparently don't think so. As long as that luxurious light is working, who cares about its positioning? We can already imagine our OCD friends losing their minds over this.

Perfect Crime Scene Location

Porcelain dolls used to be a legitimate toy for kids, young girls in particular. But now we have things like Barbies, videogames, and the Internet. And these old-looking dolls are nothing more than a collector's item at best and a horror movie character at worst.

That's why this porcelain doll-themed room is giving you a chill down the spine. There's no way you're not thinking "serial killer" when you look directly at it. How can these homeowners be sure their army of porcelain dolls isn't going to "wake up" and kill them overnight? We guess they're taking their chances here...

Can You Guess Their Favorite Animal?

Modern life can be tough on the old-school farmboys and girls. Fortunately, there's more than one way you can transform your living room into a scene straight out of the countryside. Making the inside look like the outside is perfect, but is there a right way to do it?

Judging by this crazy space, all you need is a solid paint job and at least one picture of your favorite farm animal. The result may be both tacky and painful on the eyes, but you have to admit it, it takes you back to the good old days!

New Wave Throwback

Customized bathrooms are a silly idea from the start, even when your theme is the always cool '80s New Wave style. Lava lamps, bright colors, abstract patterns, and ocean-inspired wallpapers: what a great throwback to the yuppie decade!

But no matter how much you like the '80s, it's always better to leave the past behind and start living in the present. This bathroom makes us want to rock a classic Talking Heads record and buy a brick-sized phone, but we're not so sure we would like to see this odd W.C. every single day of our lives.

Note to Self: Stay Off the Toilet

People love when their homes reflect their personalities. But can we leave personalization out of the bathroom? Because every time homeowners try to have a one-of-a-kind toilet, the result is nothing but an offense to home design, future visitors, and humanity in general.

This is yet another horrid toilet making it to our list, probably owned by a big fan of butterflies. Insects near my bottom? That's just what I needed to have a good time in the bathroom! Unfortunately, we don't think these butterflies will fly away anytime soon, and this toilet is probably still presenting itself looking like that.

"Cupboards Need Feet," Said No One Ever

After seeing the initial design of their new kitchen, these homeowners were saddened because their kitchen island wasn't as "grounded" as they wanted. They thought about it, and they realized what was missing: some solid, sturdy feet!

So, the poor interior designers were forced to add ornamental feet that look like buttresses on a building, and you'll stumble over for the rest of your life. It's like if you're asking for your kitchen to play tricks on you, just to make the cooking process more exciting. Yes, it's not as ugly as most design fails on our list, but it's unbelievably unpractical and unnecessary.

The Lambo Comes First

This picture is wrong in so many ways; it's even hard to begin... First, you have the strange decision of covering your windows with some drawings, which means you're no longer able to look outside. But then, you have the odd nature of the drawings, too.

In what we believe to be a representation of the entire household, you've got your family members on the right side. On the left, though, with the clear highlight, is the family car! We know Lamborghini owners are proud people, but this family had better get their priorities straight.

Still On Sale

This empty house looks like one of those places real estate agents have been trying to sell for ages. "The house is in a nice location, and the price is right, but buyers just don't come in with an offer. What can be the problem?" wonder the real estate agents.

Well, have you considered repainting the stairs? We don't know about you, but our dream home never featured an over-the-top staircase containing images of bullfights, JFK, and someone else's pets. Not to mention that these stairs are probably a tripping hazard with all those colors and confusing drawings.

Emergency Exit?

This absurd door was either made for levitating people or out of sheer incompetence. "As useless as a door to the roof" makes sense as an expression but not as a real-life item. Still, there's someone who lives in this home and who's forced to look at this nonsensical door every single day of his or her life!

We just can't understand it. Life is preposterous enough without useless doors... Can you imagine waking-up during a hazy morning and leaving through this door by mistake? That would be a leg-breaking tumble never to forget!

700 TV Channels... Plus 2!

Unless you have a proper basement, it's always challenging to figure out where to put the washing machines. Yet, we've never seen a laundry in the living room before, and it's as crazy-looking as it sounds! Whenever these homeowners are tired of watching cable TV, they can always tune in for a session of... clothes being washed!

Yes, it's not the most entertaining show on the list, but it's their unique, odd family tradition. With this much supervision, those two washing machines are probably working like a charm! Let's at least hope they use a nice-smelling softener.

When The Joke Wears Off

Funny designs are a little bit like a satirical tattoo. Once the joke wears off, there's nothing left for you to feel but a lifetime's worth of remorse. We guess this bathroom floor was hilarious for one or two hours, but how long does it take before you feel like smashing these annoying fish with a hammer?

That said, if you're looking for a guaranteed way of hating your house, you'd better decorate it with nothing but LOL designs. If at least the bathroom floor could disappear through the drain, just like those fish...

Unfathomably Slimy

This horrid window is one of the main reasons why interior designers need to be considered essential workers right away! We're not sure what the point of this gruesome decoration style is, but we're pretty sure this is the work of an amateur.

Was the inspiration behind this window worms, snakes, and slugs? You know, all those crawling creatures we love to look at and have around... Everything about this image seems to scream "slime," and we don't understand why someone would ever choose to decorate their home like this. Even the little porcelain dog seems to be looking away.

The Ghost of Beds Past

From time to time, our comfy beds go awry, and we need to spend some bucks to buy a new one. It's the natural way of things. But some homeowners don't like a waste, so they find creative ways of making the most out of the bedsprings of their old bed.

And what better inspiration to get a good night of sleep than to look directly at your old bed's bedsprings all the time? And the only downside is that now your bedroom looks like a tetanus hotspot... Such a small price to pay!

That One Annoying Flaw

Breaking news: nobody is perfect. Once you know someone very well, no matter how cool he or she looks at first, you'll start to notice they always have this one annoying flaw. In the case of this homeowner, such a flaw is an uncontainable passion for... rugs!

This extremely spacious, light, and bright home could be perfect if it weren't for the incomprehensible insistence on covering every surface with a rug. But why, guys? Your wooden floor looks super cool, and one rug per living area is more than enough to provide that homely vibe you're after rather than making it look like a rug warehouse!
